Lawsuits against Yaz, Yasmin double to 2,000

judge gavelThe number of lawsuits filed in federal district court against Bayer and its blockbuster birth control pill Yaz has doubled to 2,000, and that doesn’t include the hundreds more that have been filed in state courts, according to the Madison Record. The lawsuits allege that Bayer did not adequately warn women that by taking Yaz, as well as Bayer’s similar birth control pill Yasmin, they were at greater risk for serious side effects including blood clots, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, heart attack and even gallbladder problems.

It happened two years ago when the 46-year-old mother of three suddenly and unexpectedly suffered a pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in her lungs. She was rushed to the hospital but the lack of oxygen had caused massive brain damage. She will never be able to care for herself again, doctors said.

The label change comes on the heels of hundreds of lawsuits filed both in the United States and Canada by women who say they were injured by Yaz or Yasmin but were not adequately warned of the risks associated with taking the pills. Bayer agreed to make the changes to the pills’ labels based on two large, multiyear studies of more than 120,000 women taking contraceptives in the U.S. and the U.K.
