Bayer has dropped its patent suit in Delaware against Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd., and Barr Pharmaceuticals for infringing on its multi-million-dollar-selling oral contraceptive Yaz. Bayer had filed the lawsuit claiming TVA’s generic version of Yaz, known as Gianvi, infringed on Yaz. However, Bayer says it is maintaining its patent suit against Teva and Barr in Nevada District Court.
A Louisiana woman is suing Bayer Corporation claiming the company’s top-selling birth control pill Yaz caused her to develop life-threatening blood clots in her lungs. Heather Gillespie claims that the makers of the oral contraceptive, also known as Yasmin and the generic ocella, failed to warn her of the risks associated with taking the pills. She is seeking damages.
A Virginia woman has filed a lawsuit against the makers of Yaz birth control pill, claiming the oral contraceptive damaged her gallbladder and drove her to attempt suicide. Megan M. Stewart, 21, filed the 11-count complaint against Bayer Corporation last month, adding to the more than 1,000 lawsuits filed against the pharmaceutical company by women who allege they were not adequately warned of the risks involved with taking Yaz, also known as Yasmin and Ocella.
An understudy for the Broadway show “Wicked” has joined a lawsuit against Bayer HealthCare, claiming the company’s best-seller birth control pill Yasmin caused her to suffer a stroke at the young age of 27. Brenda Hamilton had been on the pill two years when in May 2007 she became ill. She has since recovered.
Twenty-five California women have joined more than a thousand others across the country in a lawsuit against Bayer HealthCare claiming the company’s blockbuster birth control pills – Yaz and Yasmin – caused them to suffer life threatening health problems such as strokes and blood clots. The defendants say the company was aware its oral contraceptives increased a woman’s chances of serious health problems even more than other birth control pills, yet the company failed to adequately warn women of that risk.
Dawn Varrechio, a mother of four, was shocked to discover that her breathing problems were due to blood clots in both of her lungs. But she became angry when she found out her birth control pills were the culprit. “It’s scary to think that at 35, you could be gone, like that quickly,” she told CBS3 News.
The contraceptive business has boomed since the birth control pill hit the market 50 years ago. Now birth control comes in the form of pills, patches, rings, implants and intrauterine devices, and the makers of such products claim they are even safer than before. Judging by the thousands lawsuits filed by women who claim they suffered life-threatening blood clots, strokes and gallbladder problems because of the contraceptives, safety may still be an issue. But Salon.com opinion editor Geraldine Sealey claims birth control pills brought on another, less known, side effect – the loss of her libido.
“The decision to begin taking Yaz was catastrophic in our lives,” says Christopher Hull of Bedford, Texas, in a response to a comment on the April 19, 2010, Los Angeles Times article “New Pills, New Issues,” which addressed the safety of birth control pills. Ivan Garcia of Los Angeles had argued the article was “discouraging” for an up-and-coming college student considering the medical field.
Canadian Ann Schwoob was just 33 years old when she went to the hospital complaining of chest pains. She was diagnosed with pneumonia, but entered a second hospital days later where she was told she had suffered a pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot blocking the pulmonary artery that leads to the lungs. It could have killed her. But what took Schwoob by surprise was what caused the condition – her birth control pills.
Bayer Healthcare Corp. says it sufficiently warned women that there was a risk of life-threatening side effects associated with its oral contraceptives, Yaz and Yasmin. The drug company claims that all birth control pills carry warnings of possible side effects and that if taken properly, their drugs are safe.
